U-Boot
A game about running a U-boat flotilla from 1939 to 1945. You sit in the BdU staff room and see neither the fighting nor the boats themselves. All you know is what came in by signal, so a position on the map can be half a day old. The boats and commanders are historical, but what happens to them is up to you.
Mapa sztabowaThe staff map
Pozycje z ostatnich meldunkówPositions from the last reports
A boat sits on the map where it sent its last signal, with the number of hours since then next to it. After three silent days it is posted missing, after 21 it is presumed lost. With no sun or stars for a fix, the navigator works by dead reckoning and a report can be tens of miles out. Sinkings come in as teleprinter strips.
- Kontakt jednego okrętu można przekazać innym albo ustawić kilka okrętów w linię patrolową.
- One boat's contact can be passed on to others, or several boats can be set up in a patrol line.
- The weather changes as lows cross the Atlantic. In a storm a boat goes under, and in fog it can run into a destroyer.
- Kontakty podaje też B-Dienst, który czyta brytyjskie szyfry, i samoloty KG 40.
- B-Dienst, which reads British codes, and the KG 40 aircraft also report contacts.
- Kolor kontaktu mówi, kto go zgłosił: okręt, B-Dienst, Condor albo agent Abwehry w Algeciras. Z czasem rośnie wokół niego stożek możliwej pozycji. Przy 150 milach kontakt znika z mapy, a prawym przyciskiem można go zdjąć wcześniej.
- A contact's colour shows who reported it: a boat, B-Dienst, a Condor or an Abwehr agent in Algeciras. Over time a cone of possible positions grows around it. At 150 miles the contact drops off the map, and you can right-click it away earlier.
- Signals can be wrong. Two boats on dead reckoning can report the same convoy as two. Some signals arrive garbled and you wait for a repeat, and some never arrive.
- The Signals screen (E) lists every signal day by day, with a calendar going back to September 1939. You can filter by boat and jump from a signal to the map, the boat's file or the commander.
- Nakładki pogody (W), głębokości (D) i lotnictwa wroga (A) można włączyć razem. Każda ma swoją legendę nad stałą legendą mapy.
- The weather (W), depth (D) and enemy aircraft (A) overlays can be on at the same time. Each has its own legend above the map's permanent one.
- In the background you hear the teleprinter with each signal, stamps, paper, a clock and rain on the window that follows the weather over the base. The map music plays with gaps of silence.
Karta okrętuThe boat card
Rozkazy dla okrętuOrders for a boat
Click a boat and its card slides out on the left. It shows fuel, torpedoes, provisions, condition and crew fatigue as of the last report. Before you give an order you can see the route, the days on passage, fuel for the way home, the weather and enemy aircraft in the area.
- Z karty wydaje się rozkazy: zmiana obszaru, przechwycenie kontaktu, powrót do bazy, wilcze stado, stawianie min.
- The card holds the orders: change area, intercept a contact, return to base, form a wolf pack, lay mines.
- Every order with a target on the map works the same way. Right-click picks the target, left-drag moves the map, Esc cancels.
- A boat out of fuel can be refuelled by another one or towed home. The wounded can be handed over to a supply boat or to a boat on its way back.
- You can call a crew back from leave, but morale drops. After a very good patrol there is no such cost.
- Karta podaje przybliżony termin wejścia do portu, liczony z ostatniej depeszy. Jeśli okręt się spóźnia i milczy, termin robi się czerwony.
- The card gives an estimated date of arrival in port, worked out from the last signal. If the boat is late and silent, the date turns red.
- Boats going from Kiel to the North Sea use the Kiel Canal, on the surface. From 1944 air raids and mines close it for days at a time.
- Depesze z morza są podpisane nazwiskiem dowódcy. Jeśli dowodzi zastępca, podpisuje I WO.
- Signals from sea are signed with the commander's name. If the first watch officer is in acting command, he signs instead.
Akta okrętuThe boat file
Wszystko o jednym okręcieEverything about one boat
Akta okrętu mają siedem przekładek. Q i E przechodzą do sąsiedniego okrętu, Tab do następnej przekładki, a Esc wraca na poprzedni ekran. Tutaj przekładki przewracają się same, można też je klikać.
The boat file has seven tabs. Q and E move to the next or previous boat, Tab to the next tab, and Esc goes back to the previous screen. On this page the tabs turn by themselves, or you can click them.
Cała załoga z nazwiska i stopnia, z oceną i morale. Doświadczonych ludzi można przenieść na nowy okręt, a braki uzupełniają rekruci. Oficerowie muszą być w komplecie, pozostałe stanowiska mają swoje minimum. The whole crew by name and rank, with a rating and morale. Experienced men can be moved to a new boat and recruits fill the gaps. Officers must be complete, and every other station has a minimum.
About fifteen components. Their state is described in words, without percentages. The drawing of the boat shows what is damaged. The EINSATZBEREIT stamp means the boat can sail.
G7a i G7e, później FAT, LUT i T5, osobno w przedziale dziobowym i rufowym. Są cztery zapisane układy załadunku, a zamiast torped można wziąć miny.G7a and G7e, later FAT, LUT and T5, loaded separately into the bow and stern rooms. There are four saved loading layouts, and you can take mines instead of torpedoes.
Wszystkie depesze okrętu. Można zostawić same zatopienia albo uszkodzenia i rannych. Czerwony margines oznacza kłopoty.Every signal from the boat. You can filter down to sinkings, or to damage and wounded. A red margin means trouble.
Dziennik wojenny na wzór prawdziwego KTB: kwadrat siatki, wiatr, stan morza, widoczność, każda salwa, niewypał i bomba głębinowa. Sztab przybija pieczątkę GEPRÜFT.A war diary modelled on the real KTB: grid square, wind, sea state, visibility, every spread, dud and depth charge. The staff stamps it GEPRÜFT.
Porównuje rozkaz z przebiegiem patrolu i wymienia kontakty i zagrożenia. After each patrol the staff writes an assessment, as BdU wrote its Stellungnahme. It compares the orders with what happened and lists contacts and threats. The chart shows the plan, the route known from reports and the real one.
Zatopione statki z tonażem i datą, ranking dowódców i okrętów oraz mapka miejsc zatopień.Ships sunk with tonnage and date, commander and boat rankings, and a chart of where they went down.
LudzieThe men
Dowódcy i załogiCommanders and crews
Boats and commanders turn up on their historical dates. Prien may die earlier than he did, or live through the war. Every commander has courage and recklessness, which the game only describes in words. Both rise after good patrols and drop after air attacks and depth charges. Your command rating counts crews brought home as much as tonnage.
- Załogi można kompletować ręcznie albo zostawić to grze. Wolni ludzie i dowódcy czekają w puli.
- You can man the boats by hand or leave it to the game. Spare men and commanders wait in a pool.
- Recruitment (P) shows the whole pool without picking a boat first. You can filter by station and post a man straight away.
- Men are wounded and killed by aircraft, depth charges and storms. When the captain is wounded, the I WO takes over.
- Na ciepłych wodach, przy spokojnym morzu i bez samolotów dowódca czasem pozwala załodze popływać. Morale rośnie, zmęczenie spada. Rzadko pojawia się rekin.
- In warm waters, in a calm sea with no aircraft about, a commander sometimes lets the crew swim. Morale goes up and fatigue down. Once in a while a shark turns up.
- Gdy giną doświadczeni podoficerowie, ze szkół przychodzą słabiej wyszkoleni rekruci.
- As experienced petty officers are lost, the schools send out less trained recruits.
- After a patrol the crew gets 14–28 days of leave and the boat goes in for repairs. A boat that is too badly damaged is scrapped.
- The missing come back on the list as prisoners once the Red Cross passes on word of them.
SzpitalHospital
Ranni zostają w porcie, w którym ich zdjętoThe wounded stay in the port where they were landed
Jeśli nikt go nie odbierze w ciągu 21 dni, trafia do puli. Ciężko ranni jadą po szpitalu portowym do lazaretu w Rzeszy.
Every port has a hospital. A sailor who has recovered waits where he was left, and gets back aboard only when a boat is lying in that same port. If nobody collects him within 21 days, he goes to the pool. The badly wounded go on from the port hospital to a reserve hospital in the Reich.
- Rannego zostawionego w Kilonii nie odbierze okręt stojący w Breście.
- A man left in hospital at Kiel cannot be picked up by a boat lying at Brest.
- Automatic manning first takes the boat's own men who are waiting in hospital.
- Gdy port przejdzie w ręce wroga, jego ranni trafiają do puli.
- When a port falls to the enemy, its wounded go to the pool.
- Wounds come from aircraft, depth charges and storms, from torpedo handling, in port and on leave.
Port i logistykaPort and logistics
Miejsc w bunkrze jest małoPen space is limited
A boat coming back needs somewhere to lie. A big refit needs a dry pen or a dock, and a boat at the quay can be hit in an air raid. The base screen (B) shows the port from above, and you drag boats between pens, dock and quay. Green means ready, orange means in the yard or the crew is on leave, red means waiting for repairs.
- Każda baza ma własny zapas torped i paliwa. Pociąg dowozi torpedy co kilka dni, a nowe typy przychodzą w małych partiach. Gdy magazyn jest pusty, okręt wychodzi z niepełnym ładunkiem.
- Each base has its own stock of torpedoes and fuel. A train brings torpedoes every few days, and new types come in small batches. If the store is empty, the boat sails with a partial load.
- From October 1940 a boat in the Biscay ports can wait up to two days for its Sperrbrecher escort. There are sometimes mines on the approaches.
- A return order checks whether the base will have room once the boats already heading there arrive. If not, the quartermaster asks whether to send the boat to another port.
- Miejsce można zwolnić, wysyłając okręt w morze przed końcem urlopu. Odbija się to na morale.
- You can free a berth by sending a boat out before its leave is over. Morale suffers for it.
Historia i politykaHistory and politics
Rozkazy z Berlina i kampanie BdUOrders from Berlin and BdU campaigns
Przed każdym nowym teatrem przychodzi brief z Berlina: wycinki z gazet, Lagebericht i stan flotylli. Dönitz prosi o okręty do swoich kampanii, flota nawodna chce linii rozpoznania, a Abwehra donosi, że Force H wyszła z Gibraltaru. Zatopienie amerykańskiego statku w 1940 roku to incydent dyplomatyczny. Dobre patrole trafiają do Wehrmachtbericht, a Berlin co jakiś czas zabiera okręty na inne teatry.
Before each new theatre a brief comes from Berlin: press cuttings, a Lagebericht and the state of the flotilla. Every quarter BdU sends a directive with goals. How far he trusts you is described in words. Dönitz asks for boats for his campaigns, the surface fleet wants a scouting line, and the Abwehr reports Force H leaving Gibraltar. Sinking an American ship in 1940 is a diplomatic incident. Good patrols make it into the Wehrmachtbericht, and every so often Berlin moves boats to other theatres.
WEHRMACHTBERICHT · 15.03.1941
A commander who sinks over 30,000 GRT in one patrol is named in the communiqué. After the third mention Berlin asks whether he should be teaching at the school instead.

- Eleven situations with conflicting orders, for example Raeder and Dönitz, or OKW and BdU, wanting different things. You choose whose order to follow.
- Silent Otto is a new-game switch. With it on, if BdU's trust drops very low he limits your freedom step by step and in the end relieves you of command. With it off, trust can be rebuilt and the game goes on.
- Turning points of the war, such as the end of easy pickings off the US coast, can move by a few weeks depending on how you do.
EnigmaEnigma
Enigma i ULTRAEnigma and ULTRA
The British read your signals during the periods when they really did. The game does not tell you so. You only notice that convoys sometimes turn away just before a patrol line, and notes about possible causes appear in the diary: radar, direction finding, treason or chance. You never decrypt anything by hand, the radio operator does that. The answer comes only after the war, in the files declassified in 1974.
- Na ULTRA nie ma sposobu w grze. Można tylko mniej nadawać.
- There is no way to beat ULTRA in the game. You can only transmit less.
- Abwehra szuka szpiega w stoczni. Czasem alarm jest fałszywy.
- The Abwehr looks for a spy in the yard. Sometimes the alarm is false.
- Gdy okręt zginie i mogą być jeńcy, sztab sprawdza, czy maszynę i klucze zniszczono.
- When a boat is lost and there may be prisoners, the staff checks whether the machine and keys were destroyed.
- The inquiries by Dönitz in 1941 and Maertens in 1943 end as they did in history, with the cipher declared safe.
TechnikaTechnology
Rozwój sprzętu i stoczniaEquipment and the shipyard
Za oceny dowództwa gracz dostaje punkty i rozdziela je między kierunki rozwoju: torpedy, wykrywanie i łączność, ochronę przed asdikiem, napęd i zasięg, nowe typy okrętów i szkolenie. Nowy sprzęt nie wejdzie do służby przed swoją historyczną datą. W stoczni zamawia się nowe okręty.
Command ratings earn points, which you split between lines of development: torpedoes, detection and signals, protection against asdic, propulsion and range, new boat types and training. New equipment never enters service before its historical date. New boats are ordered from the shipyard.
- Diesle, silniki elektryczne, baterie, kadłub, balast, stery i wały muszą być w pełni naprawione, zanim okręt wyjdzie z portu.
- Diesels, electric motors, batteries, hull, ballast, steering and shafts must be fully repaired before a boat can leave port.
- Działo pokładowe ma 250 pocisków (8,8 cm) albo 150 (10,5 cm). Bomby głębinowe mogą je uszkodzić.
- The deck gun carries 250 rounds (8.8 cm) or 150 (10.5 cm). Depth charges can damage it.
- Now and then someone forgets the muzzle plug and the gun bursts when it fires, as on U-110 and U-156. Only the yard can repair it.
- Stocznia ma serie II, VII, IX, XIV, XXI i XXIII z podtypami. IID można zamawiać do grudnia 1940.
- The yard has the II, VII, IX, XIV, XXI and XXIII series with their subtypes. The IID can be ordered until December 1940.
PrzeciwnikThe enemy
Przeciwnik w kolejnych latachThe enemy, year by year
From May 1941 Bletchley Park reads your orders and convoys go round the patrol lines more often. From March 1943 escort-carrier groups are at sea, and with radar and the Leigh light a surfaced boat is no longer safe at night. Air cover grows every year until the mid-Atlantic gap closes. Bombers wreck Lorient, and there is sabotage in the yards.
- Hunter-killer groups, from USS Bogue in March 1943, go after boats that transmit a lot.
- Przy brzegach pływają patrole ZOP. Dowódcy rzadko atakują pojedynczy niszczyciel, a dwóch nie atakują wcale.
- ASW patrols work close to the coast. Commanders rarely attack a single destroyer and never a pair.
- Bunkry chronią okręty przed nalotami. Miasto wokół nich takiej ochrony nie ma.
- The pens protect the boats from air raids. The town around them has no such protection.
- Bold i Alberich: pozorne cele i pokrycie kadłuba przeciw asdikowi.
- Bold and Alberich: decoys and a hull coating against asdic.

Maj 1945May 1945
Gra kończy się w maju 1945The game ends in May 1945
The war ends as it did in history and cannot be won. On 1 May the codeword Regenbogen comes in, on 4 May Dönitz cancels it, and each commander decides for himself whether to scuttle. After the surrender the game writes your service report and compares your war with the real one: how many boats came home, what became of the best commanders and how many men survived.
